IN CHARACTER INFORMATIONName: Terra Branford
Canon: Final Fantasy VI
OU/AU/OC: OU
Canon Point: Right after entering the Imperial Observation Post on the way to the Cave to the Sealed Gate.
History: http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Terra_BranfordPersonality: At first, Terra was shy, hesitant, and withdrawn - equally scared of both herself and others - because of her powers. There are brief flashes of a cutting wit - her first remark upon learning Sabin is Edgar's twin brother is to remark she initially took him for a trained bear, but for the most part she struggles with her own identity. As the only magic user not affiliated with the Geshtalian Empire, she is a vital commodity and she knows it, leading her to be distrustful of the motives of others. One of her very few memories of her time under the influence of Kefka's Slave Crown was his command to burn several soldiers alive with her fire magic - that, coupled with her own uncertainty as to the source of her powers, leads her to fear losing control, making her reluctant to use her power for anything other than life-or-death situations.
After the siege of Narshe, she communicates with the frozen Esper Tritoch and is forcibly transformed into her Esper form, causing her to scream in fear and pain before flying west to the town of Zozo, where an elderly Esper named Ramuh takes care of her - at this time, the burden of her own power and her all-consuming fear of it cause her mind to temporarily revert to a more animalistic consciousness. She is snapped out of it - and regains her own memories - when she is exposed to the Magicite form of her father, the Esper Maduin.
With her memories restored, Terra is much more confident in herself and others - able to fully trust people, she becomes willing to open up to them and communicate on an equal level. Able to fully control her powers, she becomes willing to use them to assist others - such as taking advantage of her status as the only human/esper hybrid to become a bridge between the two worlds in order to forge an alliance between the two races. The trade-off is that as even as she is aware of and embraces her inhuman heritage, she worries that her capability for emotions as a human might be stunted, leading her to question her friends and allies about their own feelings and the nature of 'love', which she is not sure she will ever understand. All in all, as of her current canon point Terra is friendly, driven, and inquisitive but also plagued by self-doubt, with little practical experience of the world around her outside of fighting for her life.
REVISIONS ARE BELOWWhen the game begins, Terra has a mind-control device known as a Slave Crown strapped to her head; along with her two handlers she is being sent to invade Narshe and retrieve a frozen Esper found in their mine. After barreling into Narshe and murdering everything that moves with their laser-spewing mecha, Terra and her handlers (Biggs and Wedge) encounter the frozen Esper, which murders the soldiers and starts to resonate with Terra - however, the Slave Crown and Magitek Armor she is equipped with interrupt the process by exploding. She wakes up in the house of a man called Arvis, who shows her the remains of the Slave Crown and explains that her amnesia is likely a result of being forced to wear it. As she escapes from the Narshe guards into the mines, she falls through the floor into an underground cavern, the shock of the fall jarring loose memories of the Slave Crown being emplaced and being forced to burn humans alive as a test of her powers.
Much later, when she finally returns to Narshe and confronts the frozen Esper once more, she is no longer burdened by the Slave Crown or the Magitek Armor, causing the resonance to complete itself with her forcible transformation. When her comrades catch up to her in Zozo, the Esper Ramuh explains her own fear prevents her from understanding human speech. After several adventures - during which Terra is still semi-comatose, unguarded,
and in the most dangerous city on the planet - her comrades return with the Magicite of Maduin, her father.
Maduin's Magicite resonates with Terra, showing her the events behind her birth - yes, this includes her conception - and how Gestahl invaded the Esper Realm, kidnapped dozens of Espers, and
murdered her mother. Terra wakes up from her coma, ready and willing to take the fight to the Empire by acting as the bridge between humans and Espers.
Overall, her personality after she regains her memories is much more confident - she knows who she can trust, and with full control of her powers she no longer fears others using her for them. For the first time, she has actual agency, and she's chosen to exercise that agency. There are still some rough patches - knowing she's not human, and having poor life experience, she worries that she might be incapable of positive human emotions. And after Kefka's enslavement of her mind, she is not particularly fond of clowns.
For the most part, her doubt of the motives of those around her has been cleared away - no longer plagued by fear of herself, she's willing to give others the benefit of the doubt as she interacts with them.
Except Kefka. Screw that guy.
Strengths: Natural-born magic-user, specializing in fire and healing, trained in sword and knife fighting techniques, can temporarily
transform into her more powerful Esper form, which possesses enhanced physical and magical capabilities, along with the power of flight.
Weaknesses: Self-doubt about her ability to experience positive emotions owing to her inhuman parentage
Possessions: Flametongue sword, pendant passed down from parents, Maduin's magicite
Pony/Animal Type: Unicorn
Cutie Mark: A piece of
Magicite, representing her heritage as an Esper.
Pony Picture: http://oi57.tinypic.com/6sc12f.jpgSAMPLESFirst Person: As the scroll turns on, it reveals a pink unicorn, her green mane pulled back in a ponytail and her ears lowered. She doesn't appear to be aware of the scroll, looking around in an extremely confused fashion.
"I...I don't understand...I was supposed to be at the Sealed Gate..."
She shrinks in on herself before continuing, calling out for her friends.
"Where are you, everyone? Edgar? Sabin? ...Locke?"
Something occurs to her then, and she stands a bit straighter as she raises her voice.
"I-is this the Esper World? My name is Terra! I was born here! Please, if you can hear my voice, answer me!"
Third Person:Today, Terra's trying something new and almost alarmingly different -
playing. In a field just outside of Ponyville, she's folded up her cloak, placed her sword and her father's Magicite on top of it, and is proceeding to just romp around in the flowers for a while, pausing to admire the birds flying overhead and the squirrels passing through the trees.
Concentrating, her horn lights up with a shimmering red glow before she launches a sphere of harmless, glowing light into the air. Laughing, she chases after it, 'bouncing' it back up again with small, showy bolts of magic, spending several minutes doing something she never thought would be possible -
enjoying her powers.
As one final bolt dissipates the original light sphere, the color of her coat changes, becoming a much deeper pink shading to lavender around her suddenly-cloven hooves as Terra fully transforms into her Esper form, defying gravity through sheer force of will as she takes flight, doing giddy loops and rolls, skimming through the clouds as she laughes in exhiliration.
For once in her life, there's no one to fight - there's only a young mare, finally experiencing the childhood that was denied her for so long.
